Eating planet-friendly dishes is not a special occasion.
They are probably already at your favourite places — we just don’t always notice them.
Planet-Friendly Flavors Month makes these dishes easier to find, recognise and choose.
In June, restaurants across the country highlight which of their dishes are planet-friendly favourites.
Dishes can be entered if they align with the principles of the Planetary Health Diet — a dietary approach that considers both human health and the planet. Entries are accepted in three categories:
Plant-based
made entirely from plant ingredients
Plant-forward
at least 75% of the dish is plant-based
Hybrid
a traditionally meat-based dish with reduced meat content
(Beef and lamb dishes are not eligible due to their high ecological footprint.)
This way you can more easily find dishes that are good for you — and for the planet.
The Planetary Health Diet is a dietary approach that considers both human health and the planet's carrying capacity. Developed by the EAT-Lancet Commission, it emphasises eating more plant-based foods - vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains - while reducing meat, especially red meat, and processed foods.
It is not a strict diet but a flexible direction: an eating pattern that helps people live healthier lives while reducing the environmental impact of food production. Its goal is to ensure nutritious food for everyone in the long term - without depleting the Earth's resources.
JUN
The UN General Assembly established Sustainable Gastronomy Day in 2016, celebrated each year on 18 June. It draws attention to the important role food culture plays in protecting the environment, supporting local economies, and reducing food waste. Sustainable gastronomy values local ingredients, traditional knowledge, and biodiversity, helping create a healthier and more equitable food system.
Founded in 2012, the Heroes of Responsible Dining Foundation (Felelős Gasztrohős Alapítvány) is a Hungarian non-governmental, non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting environmentally responsible and sustainable food practices. The foundation operates at the intersection of gastronomy, education, and environmental awareness, with a strong focus on making sustainable eating accessible, attractive, and actionable for a wide range of audiences.
The foundation is widely recognised in Hungary for its positive, solution-oriented communication style, combining public campaigns, hands-on guidance, and appealing, eco-friendly recipes. By translating complex sustainability challenges into everyday food decisions, the organisation empowers individuals, schools, and food service providers to adopt responsible dining practices without moral pressure or exclusion.
The campaign's expert advisor is Réka Szöllősi.
